Thats broken it!! HELP!

Hi all,

Well, after finally getting some time to fit my new edelbrock manifold(pilgrim sumo,RVwent to torque the bolts and one sheared ARGH!!!
So the question is what do I do now.I have heard of a tool that screws in anti-clocwise and draws the stud out,is this the best route to go or is there anything else.
Please don"t tell me the engine has to come out
Also I have noticed the carb will not be level, engine too low or gearbox too high, seems like I need a levelling plate but I don"t think other builders have had to do this,

I feel like throwing the cover over the thing for a few months!!!!!

Thanks
Steve

Re: Thats broken it!! HELP!

steve, have had the same problem in the past you can buy a stud extractor if you have say a 10 mill broken stud you drill a 5mill hole down it then screw in the extractor anti clockwise when you get to the end it should unscrew the bolt ask in a good tool shop hope this helps ian

Yes there is a tool that you can buy from Halfords for under a tenner which consists of a plastic case of 6 bolts which can be screwed-in anti-clockwise, which allow you to unscrew the broken stud. I have a set but thankfully I haven’t had to use them! You'll need to drill a hole in the stud, so remember to cover up all apertures or you'll end up with metal shards in your engines internals...

Hi again,
Forgot to say I bought the bolts from a "bolt shop!" and I wonder if they are the correct ones, were they too soft
Is there a particular type for this application

Re: Thats broken it!! HELP!

Bolts from a 'bolt shop' may have been of a low tensile strength and not up to the torque applied.

Bolts and fasteners used on your engine should be of a higher tensile strength and be suitable for the application ie - a setbolt with a plain portion of shank rather than threaded the full length.

It may be best to buy an inlet manifold fasteners set, such as made by ARP, from Real Steel and other specialists.

Re: Thats broken it!! HELP!

For drilling the stud, buy some cobalt drill bits - they're expensive (only talking about a fiver each, not mega bucks) but will drill better than a normal HSS bit. Buy some cutting lubricant too and take it slowly

Re: Thats broken it!! HELP!

But now you've got to spend £10 to 15 on a set of easyouts and decent drills plus a couple of hours of your time.

False economy.

Real Steel sell ARP products that are designed for the purpose intended.

Re: Thats broken it!! HELP!

Hi Steve,

even softish bolts should not shear at 50 NM, are you sure your torque wrench is accurate.

ps Dont buy another comp manifold gasket I have a new spare sitting in the garage you can have
