Engine mounts

Hi All,
Wonder if you can answer a question which is puzzling me. I've opted to put a RV8 into my Sumo (for one reason or another) and have just trial fitted the engine today. however the distance across the engine mounts appear to be far too wide to ensure that they land on each of the chasis members. The engine mounts are the bracket type with the rectangular rubber at each end rather than the "cotton reel" type of mount. Has anyone out there used this type of RV8 engine mount and if so how did they get araound the distance problem. Also the drivers side mount is very close to the steering column. Should I opt for the "cotton reel" type of engine mounting?

Regards

Martsam

Re: Engine mounts

Hi Martsam

I have the standard SD1 engine mounts the same as you describe.
Mine is a MK2 Sumo and uses original Pilgrim engine mounts which are welded and not bolted on, they are a triangular shape and welded to a fillet welded onto the chassis.

Re: Engine mounts

Hi Stue,
The problem Ie chassis members have is that the brackets I have made up (which are tight to the SD1 mounts) do not fall onto the chassis members. Any photos would be welcome of how the welded attachments are attached to the chassis.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Engine mounts

Stu e,
Thanks for the offer. I hope to have the problem sorted by then (he says). Wonder if you can confirm whether the welded brackets actually are welded to the chassis members or has a plate been added onto which the brackets are welded.

Regards

Martsam

Re: Engine mounts

HI

The welded brackets are direct onto the straight chassis members. The fillets are where the front to back members meet the angled ones the fillet welds onthe front of the join to give extra strength in that area, if I remember correctly the mount barely touches the fillet..
One thing I forgot to do was put the oil filter on when positioning the engine and had to fit a remote one, one of the lessons learnt along the way.
Cheers Stu.
