Brake discs

Dear all, I've got a 1994 Ford Granada/Scorpio 1A donor car for my Sumo build. Looking at the braking system is it ok to substitute the current rear solid discs for vented discs? Can the caliper cope with this or am I stuck with replacement solid discs?

Cheers,
Malc

Re: Brake discs

The rears shouldn't need the additional cooling provided by the vented discs - solids will be just fine.
If there is any other reason you are thinking about this then a measure of the calliper travel and max gap between pads is probably the easiest way to establish viability. You may also find that the disc centreline is different on the vented.
I think the vented disc is c.24mm thick and solid c.10mm.

Re: Brake discs

Hi

Not needed, your Sumo will be half the weight of the granada and I am sure it stopped OK.

Re: Brake discs

Thanks for the replies everybody. I've got 5 stud front and back. Its just that I've seen several websites with grooved/slotted rear discs and was wondering if I really needed to go that way or are solid discs sufficient. I plan to fit a RV8 3.5 l giving @220bhp.
Anyone used Brakes international on the internet?

Cheers,
Malc

Re: Brake discs

I'm using a Granada as my donor and I'm more than happy that if the brakes can stop over a ton of Ford they'll cope just fine with my Sumo. It's my understanding that if you over brake the rear wheels it will fail the SVA as rears will lock before fronts - you'll then have to fit a compensator/adjuster to reduce the pressure. A lot of money spent for no reason IMHO.

Darren.

Re: Brake discs

i go with the rest - vented front and solid rears for my Granada rolling gear and RV3.5 - when i tested (oops) on the lane recently (please be careful with this) stopped an absolute treat until er indoors caught us and sent my mate home and me to bed early with no tea - the will be fine

Do you mean vented then? There is a difference between vented (like two discs joined together with a gap between them) and grooved discs (i.e. standard solid discs with grooves routed out on the surface).

Re: Brake discs

And............his Sumo weighs more than yours, or at least it does with him in it.
