Brake Master Cylinders

Hi all,

Have eventually got back to finishing my RV8 Sumo with Granada running gear. Am now looking to complete all loose ends on the rolling chasis. One irritation is the amount of brake pedal travel required to stop her on some recent 'not so legal' road tests !

Within my original heap of donor parts I got from a breakers yard I uncovered 2 master cylinders both from Sierras - one was a black cylindrical tube and the other a larger casting. I refurbished the first with new seals etc and installed it. I am now wondering if I refurbished the wrong one and should have gone for the larger casting given the fact that I have granada discs all round.

Any insight would be gratefully received. In terms of system being bled properly etc./.. this has all been checked. She will stop but with the pedal into the floor

Cheers,

Nigel

PS ... Also looking to source sidepipes that have the illusion that there are 4 pipes joining into one externally. Will be using old Pilgrim manifolds. Have searched the forum and found shiny bitz etc - any others that you would recommend as I need to get this right as Sumo being built in Ireland.

Sounds to me like you still have some air in there.

I think you will find that there are few who would recommend Shiny Bitz here, several of our members have had "issues". It may be wise for you to look elsewhere.

Sorry, I can't help with the master cylinder issue - if you are absolutely sure that all air is out (and that should still be questioned), then you should check the bores of the two masters you have. The Granada calipers may require more fluid volume to operate than the Sierra master can supply without excessive travel.

Re: Brake Master Cylinders

Cheers guys for your comments - will check bore size ... :thumb:

I suppose if there are any sumos out there that have the same configuration as mine i.e. smooth master cylinder casing(as opposed to rough casting type) coupled with granada brakes and are happy with their brakes then the problem is with my build rather than the basic configuration.

Any more thoughts re: sidepipe suppliers ??

Re: Brake Master Cylinders

Howdy

Concerning the sidepipes , I got mine from Factory Five Racing . If you are handy with a welder you can mod them to fit a Sumo.
Mods include welding new mounts to the sidepipe , extending sidepipes by 15cm , ceramic coating.
To connect the sidepipes to your header you need to weld a collector onto the sidepipe ( got mine from Summit Racing) and then via flex or regular pipe to your header.
http://parts.factoryfive.com/newcata...x/sidepipe.htm
It`s quite a lot of work getting them right , although I did save around 600€ and I really need to watch the budget:boohoo::boohoo:

Regards

Frank

Re: Brake Master Cylinders

I used custom chrome with a 4 into 1 collector (should that be 1 into 4 into 1?)
Take a look at their website, or see europa - they stock them. They are present at most Kit car shows, the guys are always very decent. They sent me some adapter tubing for free when I found I'd cocked up my 'guestimate' of the inlet pipe diameter.

Mine are in chrome, but I believe they now do stainless as an option. All you need to specify is the tube size on the input end, which diameter you want (2 size options when I did mine) and the length you want. I got mine made slightly longer than the Pilgrim sidepipes as I think the Pilgrim item's look like they stop too short to me.

Re: Brake Master Cylinders

I think the smooth black master cylinder is from a sierra with ABS. Could be wrong but there were at least two types fitted to early sierras. I would try the other one and see if things improve. Not entirely sure what Mk III Granada calipers are like - are they just a bigger version of the sierra calipers (single piston, sliding caliper) or more like the Cortina (M16) calipers with two pistons?

I got my sidepipes from Ebay USA - cheap even when shipped over here - kirkham pipes with "jet hot" coating to let them cool down quickly. Nice sound too :thumb:

Re: Brake Master Cylinders

This might be a cheap alternative to the m/c already fitted
