Noise

Hi Guys

I'm after some advice from Sumo owners with RV8 engines and Pilgrims sidepipes.
For the last 12 years i've had my Sumo on the road with underslung pipes, and must admit to liking the burble as I'm going along. Can anyone tell me if sidepipes still have the V8 sound or if they are just loud, I've been in a V6 Sumo and it was loud, setting off various car alarms as we went along.
I've read a lot of the recent posts about Pilgrims sidepipes but as it's only a 3.5 Idon't think power loss is an issue.
I've got a set of manifolds and pipes in the garage, I just can't make up my mind to fit them or not.

Thanks Stu

I know what you mean. I have swapped from underslung to sidepipes. The main problem as far as the driver is concerned you really only hear one side. Rest assured though the sound to others is awesome. You can get a feel for it when standing at the rear of the car when it ticks over, you don't loose the burble. I can't speak for Pilgrim pipes (there has been some criticism on this site of late) mine are Magnum Engineering & I am chuffed to bits with the fit, power & sound. It has got to be your choice though.

From the front or rear sidepipes definitely have the V8 sound although a little harsher. From the sides they just sound like a 4 cylinder running very badly.

Sorry to disagree Myles but the sound from the side pipes is not " just sound like a 4 cylinder running very badly".

With the Pilgrim side pipes it comes across as a muted burble when moves slowly and changes to a roar when nailing it !!

It looks and sounds right.

Go for it !!!

Paul

They do sound good with the squashed baffles, mine sounded 5hite with straight though baffles both 2" and 1+3/4" diameter....not just noisy, it was a bad "air-cooled beetle farty" sound. Problem with squashed baffles is how much BHP they are costing.

One thing is clear, it is not easy to have a nice sounding, not too loud, free flowing set of pipes. (Not when its got to fit inside a 3" sidepipe).

Well guys after a lot of thought and not being able to get over the speed bumps where I live, i've done it. My god are they a different sound, I now understand what people mean by a misfiring four pot.
Not too sure if my neighbours like it, but I do and that's what counts.
Thanks Stu.

Well done Stu. Just invest in a set of earplugs for the longer motorway journeys as it can get a little tiring and hard on the ears.

Have you got Pilgrim sidepipes?
If so you can do a simple check, shove a piece of hose up the outlet of the into pipe and up the baffle. If it stops after about 18" then the baffles are flatterned. They do sound nice like this and are not loud compared to other options. (Read on), you will lose BHP with pipes in this state.

If the baffles are not squashed and are running just normal straight though perf tube then they are way too loud in my opinnion. (Normal perf tube in other sidepipes such as Dax pipes is OK, but it's no good in the pilgrim pipes).

Pilgrim pipes with the perf tube that has "ears" is still pretty loud (quite a bit louder than the squashed baffle setup) but not so loud that it's 'orrible!
