Just to add what I have done with my top steering column mount.

I had two plates welded either side of the Pilgrim Z bracket as mentioned above this really does stiffen things up.It stops the Z stretching or compressing. However, the chassis plate is fairly thin where is Z mount bolts, so as someone else suggested I used a piece of 3/16" thick plate about 12" long by 2" on top of the chassis. On a visit to Pilgrim I noticed they were adding this spreader plate to a fatory built car. This really makes the whole of the top column mount solid and I can give a really good heave on the steering wheel without the column moving up/down, left/right or forward /aft. It moved a lot before doing these mods.

Try these ideas and I am sure you will be happy with the result.

Do not bolt the collapsable section or as mentioned before you could become a human kebab, and the collapsable section in the steering column is an SVA requirement.

Happy building

Ian
