Gents, im after some advice again please. I want to fit an oil cooler to my mk 3 sumo cobra. Im looking at a 16 row cooler, sandwich plate etc, i have room so dont need to fit a remote oil filter etc. My engine is a chevvy 5.7 small block. Do you recommend a thermostat in the sandwich plate and where is the best place to take the oil temperature from? Thanks in advance for your help,

put the cooler on, but dont pipe it in; not needed on the road or casual track day use.

Thanks for the advice lads, i believe a 16 row cooler is the norm for DAX, pilgrim dont offer a cooler, just thought it looks the bollocks more than anything.
I'll look at the hieght of the 2 and see. |

Is the oil cooler installation just for show purposes or do you think its actually required for your engine? As already said in this thread they are not normally needed for general road use and the occasional track days.
Do you have an oil temp guage installed, it does not seem you do as you ask where to install the temp bulb ? You may be surprised at how cool your engine oil actually is. General rule that oil not up to normal operating temp is just as bad for your engine as oil thats too hot. If cost is not a problem you may want to consider a water/oil intercooler system. The oil is heated up by the water when cold and cooled by the water when hot. Location is not an issue as the oil just circulates around a closed loop through the intercooler (same as with a remote oil filter) oil and water are obviously kept seperated within the intercooler and the water is then using the normal radiator for all cooling. All this said - if you want an oil cooler then have one - advice is just to ensure you have an idea of pro/cons

Just for reference. Here is Wilfs (now famous) Graph showing bore wear verses temperature! Pretty convincing evidence against Over Cooling, and using the car before the temp gets up!

Chris - I'd forgottem about this graph ! As they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Also If the oil should overheat for any extended period - I was told over 200degC for over 5 mins then its best to change it. This was only achieved when I ran a 400cu.in tuned chev engine at air temps of around 30deg.C - I only saw temps over 200deg.C after around ten hard laps (Kyalami circuit) where revs were never below 3500 and usually over 5000. And no I did not have an oil cooler installed. Good info graph from Wilf /Chris
