Smile Advice on fitting gearbox Ford 302/351

I'm after a bit of advice...
Anyone got a Ford 302/351 fitted in a Sumo??

I have a Seirra T5 gearbox I could use - but is it strong enough?? Not planning on going above 300hp, as I've been told this is the chassis limit by Pilgrim.

Anyone know if the Sierra box will fit? Or whether I'd need a different length input shaft? Or any other issues I might run into?? With sourcing flywheel, clutch etc.
Will the mustang bell housing be any good to fit marry the two?

I would like to understand fully whats involved??

I've a MK2 sumo, so this engine is not a Pilgrim supported fit, like it probably is on the MK3??

Many Thanks,
David

As far as I'm aware there are two diameters of gearbox input shaft. I think the sierra one is smaller than the Mustang.

If the sierra one does not fit the bill, get a getrag one form EBay or the like. You will be able to use a standard ford 302/351 bell housing plus some adapter bits which you will be able to get from AK. Will more than cope with the power you are after and is a nice smooth box. As for max power Gareth runs about 700 bhp when on Nos ( I think ) and his chassis has stood it but he has made quite a few mods to it.

Agree Martin, I'm running way over 300bhp in mine with no problem(?). There is no issue with the chassis, it's just the other bits holding the power train onto it

Thanks for the replies guys..

That is interesting that the chassis is okay above 300hp.. The diff will most likely be the weak point then I guess? As I am have Ford Granada MK2 diff.

Tinka - what Getrag box would I be looking for? Off a Jag of some sort?Would there be details on AK website?? Excuse my lack of knowledge, but who are AK??

Noel do you have a MK2 or 3??

Cheers,
David

AK are one of the other makes of Cobra kit cars, they tend to have Getrag boxes fitted by a lot of their customers, like myself. Here is a link to their site with all their contact details on.

AK Sports Cars - Home

Yes the getrag is normally fitted to Jag's so not too hard to pick one up there is only one on EBay at the moment but I think he is dreaming with his asking price £250 is about what I would expect to shell out.

JAGUAR XJS 5 SPEED GETRAG MANUAL GEARBOX C/W SPEEDO on eBay, also, Jaguar, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 13-Jun-08 23:16:04 BST)

If you have a good read of this forum you will see there are a lot of things that you can do to improve the setup of a pilgrim which Pilgrim don’t seam very interested to take up. I modified diff bracket as you point out is one, I think it is Sidecarbod who has started a section on a lot of the mods

Good luck Martin

Almost the same getrag box was used by bmw for the 535/635/735

only paid £50 or so.....used behind a 400hp 383 chevy with no issues

certainly one of the cheapest ways to go......

Hi David, I have a Mk 3. I assumed that the Granada diff would also be the first thing to part company but it was the diff bracket that fell to bits instead. have subsequently beefed it all up and put extra bracing on the front of the diff. You can see the carrier in my gallery.

Saying that, I have never been aggressive with the diff and always feed the power in progressively, have never dumped the clutch? When it does go it will be replaced by a Quaife
