Unhappy Strange bang!

This morning on my way to work I heard (and felt) a bang, and bits flying from under my car as if I had run over a large stone.....but didn't see anything in the road before or after.

I pulled over checked underneath but didn't notice anything so far....

Decided to take it home, on the way I noticed that there is now a loose banging from the pass-side rear over bumps?

Does anyone know what this could be?

For it to BANG I'd suggest a possible coil spring fracture or the seat that it is retained by, as you say nothing left on the road. Only real test is to get under and have a good check of everything.

I must admit a spring was my first thought, will have to take it to the garage tomorrow. . . . fingers crossed it's nothing too bad, and hopefully it might highlight a problem we can sort out (another in a long list!!)

well, it has turned out to be the crappy bolts that go through the crappy spacer plate holding the diff to the rear sub-frame which had snapped!!

The bolts fitted are no way, up to the job. And the spacer is very poor too.

Going to replace the bolts with larger high tensil ones, and put some spacer tubes in to stop the spacer plate bending.....

Chris,

I'm sure the Thames Valley local Sumo diff bracket expert will be along shortly with some advice. Cue Pete ........

Sorry about photo quality...took on my phone.

Taken from rear of car, showing where the bolt came from that broke (the others are out too in the photo). And the seemigly poor design of the spacer between the diff and subframe. Which I am going to put tubular inserts into (indicated by the yellow arrow) to stop it from bending. Which should allow me to tighten the new, heavier duty, high tensile bolts properly.

This morning we just replaced the broken bolt and pinched the others up a bit, but the spacer bends at the corners. Having said that, even this has made an unexpected difference to the handling. The back end now feels much more positive around corners.

So I can't wait to get it sorted properly tomorrow!!!
