Rear Red Brake/Side lamps

just refitting the rear side/brake lamps to the rear now paint is completed and noticed that there are no markings on the lenses, the indicators are marked with the correct markings and are the same type so i was wondering if i will get through the sva ok or must all lens bear the relevant markings.

Hi Garry,
As far as I'm aware the rear lights do not need to be "E" marked, as long as they meet the radius requirements, position, and are bright enough they should be acceptable.

My rear indicators lights are E marked but ot eh rear side brake light and they passed the SVA.

I mounted the indicators at the top with the E mark facing up so it was easy to see.

It worked for me

Ian

According to SVA 9.1 Annex.1 there should be an " 'E', 'e' , Identity symbol or BS mark "
on each lens. Only if they are a combined cluster is it ok to have a single E mark or equivalent. It is then up to the applicant to prove, if requested, that the equivalent mark complies with UK standards.

Having just reread the section in the SVA manual detailing reasons for failure I noted that nowhere does it state that not having an E mark or equivalent is a cause to fail ?
It only states, quote - " except in the case of a headlamp, not of a similar brightness when compared with a lamp bearing an appropriate approval mark as given in annex 1" end quote.

So I read that as long as the lamp brightness can be compared to a similar E marked lamp the actual lamp doesn't need an E mark ????

Can any one enlighten (pardon the pun) us.

SVA Notes, Section 9.1 Note 3 states:-
"The brightness of lamps bearing an appropriate approval mark, as given in Annex 1, defines the acceptable standard. Lamps not bearing such a mark should emit light of similar brightness."
From this I gather that as long as the lamp is as bright as one with the approved mark, it is acceptable.
The approval mark E or e Identity symbol or BS marks are:-
Rear position lamp - "R"
Stop Lamp - "S1" or "S2"

You don't need an "E" mark as long as they are the right colour, intensity and radius. I fitted the 488 style ones, which don’t have an “E” mark on them and they passed OK, and in November last year a friend of mine had the same result at a different centre.
