| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo Hi Gareth I fitted a 302 engine into a MK3 Sumo. I used the Rover engine mountings from Pilgram (which I modified a bit to lift the engine a few millimeters higher). The reason I used the Rover mountings was, because of the other part of the mounting I got with the engine was not the standard 302 mounting, but one for the Ford Thunderbird. Pilgram do make the lower part of the engine mounting and one can buy the upper part from Real Steal. This would have been the route I would have followed if I couldn't get it right. The gearbox mounting I got from Pilgram. I bought a shorter oil filter from Real Steal, and there is more than enough space now between the filter and the chassis. In the photos you can see the engine had a pulley with place for three belts, I simply cut the front two off. As you can see it clears the steering rack by a few mm. Again Real Steel do sell the pullies, just check the sizes. Hope this helps, Kallie http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/784.jpg http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/785.jpg http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/786.jpg |

| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo Thanks Kallie My problem seems to be that i to have the wrong engine mounts the ones i got with the engine dont appear to be the 'lug type' but more of a conventional 'sandwich type' and far to big to go in.did you retain the plate the bolts to the engine, use RV8 rubber mounts and the bottom chassis/engine mounts from pilgrim.what do they look like. my bottom pulley is the single wide belt type that drives the water pump and alternator as well so i cant cut this down but i assume i can buy differnt pulleys from real steel.how close is your engine to the bulkhead and how high or low does it sit in relation to everything else.any other tips would be greatly appreciated thanks Gareth

| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo Hi Gareth I have '95 Ford Mustang 302 EFI engine installed in my Sumo. I used Ford standard "sandwich type" motor mounts and fabricated the brackets by myself. If you've got the same mounts (left and right mounts are different - orientation of location pin-hole!) I can help you with the bracket drawings. Let me know, so i'll scan in the drawings and post over. I had to removed smog-pump system and AC pump+bracket to fit engine into chassis. You also need to relocate oil filter, i used TD Performance adapter-hose kit. Otherwise it sits just fine. Aivar |

| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo Hi Gareth, >did you retain the plate the bolts to the engine, use RV8 rubber >mounts and the bottom chassis/engine mounts from pilgrim. Yes, the plate and bolts was from the engine, the rubber mounts I can say under correction is Rover or standard mounting. The bottom chassis/engine mounts are the Rover ones I got from Pilgram >what do they look like. I tried to take a pic but it did not work so I will try and draw it for you and email it to you later if that's okey. >how close is your engine to the bulkhead and how high or low does it >sit in relation to everything else. I have added 2 pics for you I hope this explains it. In relation to the bulkhead and the engine they are about +- 2-3mm apart. >again any other tips would be greatly appreciated If you would like, send me a private email with your tel nr. and I would be happy to explain what else I have done. Hope this helps, Kallie |

| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo Hi Aivar thanks for the reply my engine is from a 85/86 mustang with 5 speed T5 box but it seems that everything else is different including pulleys mounts brackets etc.the engine also came with a paxton supercharger so im assuming that a lot of the brackets are different to accomadate this.as yet i dont know if its practical to fit this or if it will fit anywhere.do you have problems with the engine 'hitting' anything under heavy braking or acceration as 2-3mm seems very tight.the drawings would be useful if possible.thanks Gareth

| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo HI, The engine bay when fitting a US V8 is tight. My 350 fits with only 16mm at the front, and the same at the rear. I have altered the battery shelf slightly, to fit the bell housing. I understand Pilgrim trim the bell housing sometimes to fit....cut 1" of the top. I moved and reinforced the shelf instead. Norm Oh well, done it again! |

I can take a few pictures tomorrow (or the day after) to point out some critical places, so you can imagine if your paxton SC stuff can accommodate into engine bay without major chassis damage.:9 Cheers Aivar |

| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo ive been toying with the idea of losing the battery shelf altogether and relocating the battery to the boot.this would give loads more clearance and solve the pulley/oil filter problem as well.can anyone see any other problems that might arise if i do this. gareth

| RE: 302 into Mk3 Sumo This shelf does transfer some of the tortional load in the chassis, hence the corner strengthening pieces. Moving it up and using larger triangular strentheners is an option. Remember, the underside of the shelf is the top of the tunnel sheet metal, and this would need altering also I expect. Norm. Oh well, done it again! |
