Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

How close is your offside exhaust manifold to the steering column, at the uj?

I've just trial fitted mine and it seems altogether too close - maybe 1/4 - 3/8 inch. Far enough to turn, but maybe near enough to touch if the engine shakes...

thanks chaps

b

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

What sort of exhaust manifolds are you using? I have the Pilgrim supplied ones and there is pleny of room.

Cheers,

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

I have the Pilgrim ones, too.

How much space do you have at the front of the engine? I wonder if I have to shift forward a bit, though there isn't that much space...

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

Bernie,
What chassis are you using, and what steering column?
Most of us have the MkIII Sierra-base chassis, and therefore use the sierra steering column.

Are you using sidepipes or underslungs, again most of us use sidepipes, and theres plenty of room, as Tony said previously.

If none of this helps, suggest you post a pic so we can see the problem.

Kevin

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

My Pilgrim manifolds come close enough to the steering joint that the exhaust wrap on the manifold has been cut by the joint. It does not actually seem to touch metal-to-metal but it is close !

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

Paul's is the same as mine, then - I have the Sierra MKIII chassis, with all the standard bits and side pipes - if I wrap the manifold the wrapping will jam the steering.

I've been looking at the engine after work today, and I think if I lift it a bit, it may move forward a touch to make things a bit better, but I won't manage "plenty of room" like Tony. And I can't move it very far forward, because then I won't ever be able to get the fan belt off.

BTW - different subject - I bought the 1100mm fan belt as in the book, but it was too long, 1075 was better, for those following along behind!

And here are some pics -

The manifold - is it the same as everyone else's?

The engine front end gap, about two fan belts

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

Sidepipe mainfold looks the same as mine.
My gap at the front is about 1 fan belt's width.

If I can get a weekend pass to look in the garage I'll see what the gap looks like on the steering column.

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

Bernie,

I also have 'plenty of room' between the steering UJ's and the exhaust manifold (Which is also wrapped). Your photo's of the front clearance shows that your engine is alot further back than mine though. I am just able to fit a fan belt through the gap at the front (It needs to be squished a little)

RE: Question for RV8 Sumo Owners

Well, thank you, team. I looks like I'll have to get my scaffolding A-frames and hoist out again, and shift the engine forward a bit.

Ho-hum

thanks again
