Sumo - Rear Hub Bearings

I am stripping down my Granada rear hub for the obligatory cleaning and painting.

I will probably replace the bearings whilst I am at it as a precaution as dirt has already got in when I took the hubs apart.

I am also hoping that I do not need to replace the hubs themselves as well. How worn does a hub have to be before it is replaced? I can see a mark on the hub but can't feel any discernable wear....

Hopefully someone has some practical experience on this front..

RE: Sumo - Rear Hub Bearings

Brian, just stumbled across your posting so it might be a bit late to reply - but her goes anyway as I'm doing my running gear at the moment...

I assume you are talking about the rear stub axles, in which case there are "wear/shiny" marks where the bearings form an interfearance fit or should do unless they have been rotating without the inner bearing race moving, there is nothing in the Granada manual to provide min dia. measurement so as long as you needed to use a puller to draw the axle out they should be OK, if youve gotten dirt into the assy at some time its most likley that this would have been atracted to the inners of the bearing and done the damage there, if things go wrong with the bearing overheating etc its more often the case that the inner race will fuse to the stub or if it rotates will leave very visible scoring, mine have a "wear" mark but no play so just new bearings & seals for me.

Hope this is of some use

PS - where do you get your Granny parts from as I'm having some problems with the suposed "reputable" sources ?

Brian - Ooops sorry one little bit of duff info, you dont use a puller on the stub axles only on the flange (but you know that!!!) - all other info is as Ive found it to be...

RE: Sumo - Rear Hub Bearings

Hi Mike

The hub certainly has a tight fit. I needed puller and only have the shiny wear marks.

In terms of parts I went to my local dealer Inchacape Ford. I have had two different experiences with them. The first time I was served by a young chap who gave me a 30% discount if I was prepared to wait a week. Unfortunately they couldn't identify my master cylinder (despite having all the parts with me). Thye took a guess and ordered the wrong one. When I went back for a credit note I was served by the most customer unfriendly individual imaginable. I got a barrage of abuse regarding kit car builders and the lact of vin for my doner car. He initially refused to take the part back - I hand't even broken the seal on the plastic bag.

Anyway my local motor factors have proved their worth. They can supply bearings, master cylinders recon brakes the works - I now now rely on them for pretty much everything I need. They will also deal with the Ford dealer if needs be

Thanks for the advice
