Capability of Granada Differential

I am interested to know what Sumo owners experience is with running a Ford Granada differenttial behind a manual transmission American V8 such as Ford 302/351 or Chevy 327/350. Most info indicates that it will hold up ok with midly tuned engines and not to much abuse with side stepping clutch . Does anybody have any experience to back this up. Also what upgrades or different diffs can be installed , I understand converting a MK III Granada based rear susp to Jag is a bit of a project , Sierra Cosworth Diff a better bet ??

Jim

RE: Capability of Granada Differential

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum,
I would agree that the granny diff should cope with mildly tuned V8s
but it's not the power but the torque that will kill them.
Due to the light weight of a cobra you'll break traction and wheel spin rather break the diff in most cases.

Oh yes the Cossy diff is the way forward I think.

Only my opinion

RE: Capability of Granada Differential

Hi Jim,

I don't know of many people who have fitted an American block to a Sumo MkIII chassis as most installs I know of are with a lightwieght Rover block. Martin Underhil has a 5.7 Chevy fitted and his car is still running so Yes it can be done.

Martin's site is : http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~martinu/

The Cosworth Diff will be built to cope with the higher torque but I believe the main issue is with the mounting of the diff. As Torque will try to rotate the diff and could distort the mouting points. (This is only theoretical and as far as I'm aware no cases of distortion have been aired openly on this forum).

RE: Capability of Granada Differential

Jim,
A lot of the problem with fitting the big yank engines in the Sumo is down to the engine position, caompare to a lot of the other kits its well forward which gives us a lot better cockpit area but makes the back end very light.
If you ever saw the Mark Evans video on Sky, he fitted a 350ci Chevy and every time he pulled away the wheels spun.

Cheers
Adrian
