Fuel filler flange

Help please. I'm fitting the fuel flange and find that if I use a jubilee clip to hold the filler pipe to the flange, I cant then get the nuts on the bolt that hold the flange to the body. I'm using a Europa PO18 locking flange but it appears to be the same bolt pattern as the Pilgrim supplied flange.

Do I need the top jubille clip as the hose seems to be a tight fit around the flange ?

All advise gratefully received.

Also, I'm using ETB instruments from Pilgrim. Has anyone got a photo of their home fabricated mount for the speedo sender that goes next to the daisy wheel ? and how many fins in the daisy wheel should be left up and how many bent over.

Cheers

RE: Fuel filler flange

Can't comment on the PO18 flange. The pilgrim supplied one which I have used fitted ok with the top jubilee clip and the mounting screws.
I would say that you should use the top jubilee clip even if the hose is quite a tight fit.

As far as the speed sensor arrangement is concerned I mounted mine on the inside of the right hand (o/s) diff hanger facing forwards. A small stainless steel bent bracket (2mm thick) bolts to the hanger. Its a nice tidy arrangement and is out of harms way. I'll take a picture later today and post it this evening.

I did have to adjust the gap a little (from 2.5mm originally to 2mm) as the signal was being lost above 65mph. With the gap reduced no more loss of signal.

Not sure what you mean about bending fins back? My daisy wheel is in use exactly as supplied!

It is my second daisy wheel because I managed to bend the first one moving the jacking beam along 4 post lift. Silly mistake.

RE: Fuel filler flange

Can you not use self tapping screws to fix the flange instead of nuts/bolts?

As for the ETB gauges, you can find a template for the speedo sensor that Pilgrim recommend to fix to the front of the diff here. To get the gap to 2.5mm as recommended, use a small drill bit to measure. This should see that it works at all speeds.

As for bending back the fins, you do not need to. Call Pilgrim and they'll give you the calculation you need to program into the speedo. Did it for me and it needed no adjustment at all.

RE: Fuel filler flange

Tony, thanks for the advice. I've managed to sort the fuel flange, in tightening up the jubilee clip, I got enough clearance to fit washers and nylocks.

I've always tried to use nuts and bolts as I feel happier that this will not move where as my experience with self tappers in fibreglass is not good. I had to use self tappers to fix the stop and indicator lights though as there was no room for nuts/bolts.

How does the speedo bracket actually mount to diff ? Do you have any photos of it in place ?

Thanks

David

RE: Fuel filler flange

The daisy wheel clamps between the prop shaft and the diff. I mounted the speedo bracket to the lower part of the diff where the bracket that hold the diff in place is bolted to the diff (make sense?).

The curve in the diagram follows the curve of the lower side of the diff, keeping it nice and sturdy. Don't have any pics to hand but could take some later tonight, if you still need some.

Cheers,

RE: Fuel filler flange

Photo's would be much appreciated.

I have tried that postion but cannot get the entire head of the transducer "in line" with the daisy wheel. Does it still work if the centre of the tranducer is pointing at the outside edge of the daisy wheel ? ie some of the transducer (half of the threaded bit) is outside the circle of the daisy wheel?

David

Tony, is your Sumo in gel coat, if so how did you finish the ground edges of bonnet / bootlid etc ?

RE: Fuel filler flange

David,

Will take some pics tonight and post up. I think the transducer should still work if only partly lined up as you are trying to create a pulsing effect (due to magnets) that sends the signal to the speedo. As long as the transducer can pick up from the daisy wheel you should be OK.

I remember having problems trying to get mine aligned and if memory serves correct, mine is aligned almost to the edge of the wheel. Will confirm with some pics later.

Yes, my car is in a gel coat finish. To tidy up the edges around the boot and bonnet I simply used a felt tip pen of similar colour. I do have some gel coat to match my car but have not yet used any as I'm pleased with the general appearance. I'm thinking of either upgrading the engine or having the car painted later this year, but for now I'm simply enjoying driving it around. What fun!

RE: Fuel filler flange

Many thanks. Out of interest, what diff have you fitted ? I'm using a 2.9 Granada diff and the body around the input shaft seems alot more "chunky" that the Sierra diffs.
