Trimming of Outer Sills

Hi,

Have just picked up the body and have found that it does not fit around the fixing for the outer trailing arm pivot bolt. The outer sills continue for another 4 inches or so back from this point. Is this supposed to happen? Am I meant to trim it to fit? I would have expected the build manual to have provided the answer, but can not find any reference to this at all. Before I start to cut anything, I would like to make sure (too expensive to cock-up)

Neil

RE: Trimming of Outer Sills

You have to trim a chunk out for the rear suspension bolt, and you also have to trim a taper along the bottom edge, as the car is around 2cm wider at the front of the lower rail than the back.

You'll also find that the manual becomes less of a requirement the further you get with the build. It gets less detailed the further you progress. If you get a chance, watch the Car Is Born video. This will give you some invaluable tips on how to complete your car.

Failing that, just ask on this forum.

Cheers,
Tony B

As you get further into the build, use Mark Evan's advice - use the old manual for a funnel...its more a question of what isn't in the manual than what is.... :tu

RE: Trimming of Outer Sills

Thanks for the info.

When you say I have to trim the bottom edge as well, I presume you mean the bottom edge of the body not the chasis? I see what you all mean about the manual though, drilled my first holes to cut out the air scoop but saw not tips or guidance in the book. And I agree about the Mark Evans too, I must have watched it 4 or 5 times already, but it still doesn't cover everything. But, with that and this forum, I shall make it to the end.

Yes, the body - 20mm each side at the front to nothing at the back. Didn't come from the video, it came from the Pilgrim fitter via this forum.

RE: Trimming of Outer Sills

Bernie's right, it makes getting a good door fit much easier as well.
btw, don;t bolt donw those sills till you;ve sorted the doors. Final adjustment is to push/pull the door sills to match the doors. Those sills are quite flexible before bolting down - give it a try.

cheers,

Kevin

RE: Trimming of Outer Sills

Thanks Kevin, and Bernie, for all your help.

Must now go and find that straight ruler long enough to draw a line from front to back. I must admit that, now I am thinking about it, the front does seem to stop the back from sitting nicely.

Cheers

RE: Trimming of Outer Sills

Just attach one end of a reel of a reel of masking tape to one end of the sill, and unroll the tape till you get to the other end, and stick it on. Sill marked as easy as that. then out with the angle grinder and a decent face mask (you'll need it). You don;t have to be very accurate with the cutting.

RE: Trimming of Outer Sills

Just about to fit my body.

Does the -20mm start where the body fits to the sill, or right from the front of the body. I ask because I think the bit of the body that fastens to the sill goes beyond the front of the sill when it is finally on the car (I may be mistaken though!)

Sorry to be pedantic, but I scared to take an angle grinder to my lovely body after all the hard work of the rolling chasis. The body not fitting would P&*s me off!!

Thanks,

:tu
