Fitting the Boot

As the build progresses I am convinced that my build is doomed,

I tried fitting the boot yesterday and having trimmed the excess from the edges I find that with the rubber seal in place the boot does not sit well at all.

I can get the top edge (hinge edge) to sit level ok. I can also get the bottom edge to sit ok bit (if I hold the boot in place and push down) but the sides stick up above the body by a few mm (3 at a guess) and it looks crap. I should say that I have to push down on the boot to get even close to a reasonable fit.

so what the hell did I do wrong ?

I am using the edging trim sold by pilgrim, could it be that this is too thick ?

As yet I have not fitted the hinges and lock because I assumed that I could get a decent trial fit without, just as I did when fitting the bonnet.

As ever, all advice is welcomed.

regards
Dave

RE: Fitting the Boot

In the manual it says that you only need to remove the right angle from the body shell lip and then put your boot seal on.

I found that you also need to grind the lip back so that your boot seal sits further out towards the outside edge of the boot lid. Do it slowly so that the seal still forms a seal against the boot lid without pushing the boot lid up.

The boot lid is not a perfect fit. On the majority of the Sumo's I've seen, the lid is slightly proud down the sides. A dark body colour (mines blue) helps disguise this.

Best of luck

David

RE: Fitting the Boot

I'm not sure that I understand the problem correctly, since I'm about a year or 2 from where you are now .

But check out this post : http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/dc...1340&mode=full

Maybe it helps you...

RE: Fitting the Boot

Thanks David, so what you are saying is that the boot may actually be being fouled by the seal and that moving the seal across towards the outside will help ?

let me know if I have misunderstood,

thanks

Dave

RE: Fitting the Boot

As the other posts say, the boot lid doesn't fit perfectly, and at first glance appears to be a different profile to the body - reserve judgement until you've fitted the hinges.

Bear in mind that the rubber seal is compressed when the lid is closed so the lid won't look right sat loosely on the seal, especially a fresh new one.

Once the lid is hinged the top edge will line up, and you can adjust the lock striker to get the best compromise fit. Mine is a poor fit either side of the numberplate area but not too bad elsewhere.

Wait until you try the doors..................!!!

RE: Fitting the Boot

I spent days getting the doors right, lots of spacers everywhere, finally had a good fit, took it to be sprayed and they took the bloody doors off to paint them :} :} :}

RE: Fitting the Boot

It's actually quite a good idea to make a carefull note of what spacers go where, this makes putting it all back together after spraywork a lot easier.
