Speedo Sender - Advice Please

I've bought my gauges direct from ETB, as I wanted a specific colour scheme. ETB have recommended that I use the magnet arrangement rather than the daisy wheel set up recommended by Pilgrim as it is more reliable and easier to set up.

Now comes the tricky bit. I want to use the bracket template which Pilgrim supply to mount the sensor, but I'm not sure if I can simply replace the daisy wheel with magnets and the sender will still work?

What experiences do you guys have with the daisy wheel compared to magnets. And if you've used magnets, where did you put them and how did you locate the sender/what bracket did you use?

Perhaps, I'm better just sticking to the daisy wheel arrangement after all?

Thanks for the advice.

RE: Speedo Sender - Advice Please

I have had no problems with the daisy wheel setup. I made my own mounting plate and set the daisy wheel 2mm from the pickup sensor, as recomended by ETB.

Mind you I do have the Rover sensor installed , ready to use just in case..

RE: Speedo Sender - Advice Please

I have the daisy wheel and diff mounted sender - it all works fine, but needed some gap and aim adjustment to get right.

The magnet method is not liked by some because of the difficulty in attaching the parts to the prop flange and getting them to stay there.

The daisy wheel is quite strong once sandwiched between the prop and diff.
If you go the daisy wheel route as it says elsewhere on this forum, don't make the mistake of fitting the sender to the chassis (the chassis U channel near the diff looks ideal at first glance). Make up a bracket to fit it to the diff so that it all moves together as the diff moves around under power.

As your speedo is working fine Steve, would you be interested in selling your rover transducer? Mine, apparently, is knackered and sva a few days away :tu

RE: Speedo Sender - Advice Please

I have gone for the transducer in the gearbox (Rover LT77) and it works fine. It was easy to setup when I had the car rolling roaded. Approx 5500 pulses from memory then fine tuned by moving pointer.

I do have a template of a special bracket which I was going to make from stainless and mount on the diff. This was a modification from the Pilgrim type because mine was for the 7.5" diff (Granada) and Pilgrims is the 7" sierra. The casing on the 7.5" is bigger and the sensor needs to be relocated so as to pick up the daisy wheel. Pilgrims, it would have been pointing at the wheel at an angle.

If your interested then E-Mail your address to stuart@appleyard00.fsnet.co.uk and I'll send it in the post.

Regards

Stuart

RE: Speedo Sender - Advice Please

Tony,

We could have done a swap, so that I had something to fill the hole with, (oil pisses out otherwise).

Unfortuantely I am working in France until the weekend, sorry I saw your post to late.

If you have the daisy wheel setup ,it is only a 15 min job to make up the template, then use a 2mm drill as 'gap' guide. ETB can tell you how many pulses to enter, (thier calculations were spot on at the SVA).

Good luck..

Steve
