Sumo clutch arrangements

Hi again

I am about to close up the gearbox/engine. The last thing to do is modify the clutch fork.
Can anyone tell me what size to drill the holes and where to drill them.
Also what type of clutch cable is used for the modification.
Once the modification is completed, can the clutch cable be fitted after the engine/gearbox is fitted?

Rgds

RE: Sumo clutch arrangements

Hi again

I have since tried to drill the clutch fork. Cannot get the drill to start!! I have no idea what it's made from. Got it new from a Land Rover agent as the original box did not have one. Even a centre punch bounces off,

Anybody got any ideas??

Phil

Would post a pic but cannot get the file size down enough (any ideas on this too?)

RE: Sumo clutch arrangements

Phil,

I had no problem drilling the fork, (in the little depression where the normal pushrod would fit), used a 3.2 mm drill as a pilot.

The cable is from a Granada Mk3, sorry I can't remember the dia of the plastic sleeve/shoulder on the end.

Steve

Tried it but drill won't look at it. Tried cutting compound, even tried grinding paste. Still won't look at it.

Know anyone with a spare clutch fork? Don't want to spend money on another one as that one is brand new.

Phil

Thanks Gareth

But I'm about as far away as you get (Scotland).

Does that mean it can be drilled? Could I take it to a local machine shop/engineering firm?

What is it made of that it does not drill with normal HSS drills?

Cheers

RE: Sumo clutch arrangements

Hi Phil
Yes a local engineering firm will be able to drill it for you or use a diamond or titinium tipped drill bit.The clutch fork is case hardened which means that the outside is very hard and normal hss drill bits struggle. You could use a hss drill bit but at a very low rpm (pusually in a pillar drill) with plenty of cooling (water is ok)It will take a little while and you may have to sharprn the drill a few times but it will drill it eventually.
