    Advice/Help Please

    Hi Everyone,
I'am Marc and have just joined today.
I am in the process of buying Cobra with a 3.0 Ford engine and have been told that after 50 miles the petrol in the carb evaporates and after 10 minutes it's ok. Is this true or is part of a bigger problem with the car?

    Can anyone advise

Almost certainly what you describe is 'fuel cavitation' - basically then petrol gets hot, evaporates and the pump can't suck it into the carb so you grind to a halt. The cause is excess heat - either the fuel line is too close to the exhaust or there is too much under bonnet heat. It can be cured by re-routing the fuel line or insulating it or both. Not too difficult. to fix.

A further thought is that your carb might benefit from insulation with a phenolic pad - basically a fat, low-conductive washer to isolate the carb pad from direct engine heat transfer.

Marc - the only caveat is this:

If the existing owner cannot cure ( or cannot be bothered to cure) what should be a relatively simple fuel system problem, what else could be not up to scratch with the car?

Do you know enough about cars in general, and Cobra replicas in particular, to be able to judge?

BTW - 6 cylinder Cobra replicas won't fetch 8 cyl money. And you will want a V8 eventually anyway.

Congrats, have fun but be careful - the roads are slippy as heck this time of year.
