    Thanks for the feedback Martin,

I've tried running a temporary earth before (by way of a heavy duty jump lead direct from the battery) and it made no difference. I'll give it a try again this weekend by removing the ring terminal and clamping to make sure it's the best it can be and test again.

Also I'll remove the light fittings and keep testing. Hopefully by keep removing things and testing I'll eventually find the culprit!

Am I correct in assuming I shouldn't be getting any continuity between the +ve terminals and the earth as per my readings above?

    Hi Theo,

Just the rears. I'll try again with all bulbs removed at the weekend.

Didn't have chance last weekend as family "stuff" got in the way!!

Now, I've seen the error of my ways!

Of course, having bulbs remain in the circuit would complete the circuit, wouldn't they!!

Now removed all the bulbs and there is no continuity between positive and earth.

Tomorrow I will make all the earths top notch too and put it all back together (although all seems to be functioning fine now).

The car doesn't get anywhere near as much use as it used to. Is it possible these problems can be caused by damp / dirty terminals (in multiplugs, for example)? It seemed to fix itself before and seems to have again with all the pulling of plugs etc.

Solution may be to use the car more!

    Sean,

Halfway House meeting first Sunday every month is still going if you need a run out . Hope you managed to sort your problem if not happy to bring a meter along and do some tests with you . Having a spare pair of hands makes things easier .

    Hi John,

    Good to hear from you.

Keep promising I will get out to one of the meets but always seems to be something else happening or needs doing (or it's raining!).

    Well, finally, a solution.

It was, indeed, a bad earth but boy did it take some finding.

I now have some of the best earth connections on the planet and no weird behaviour. Just need to reassemble now. Also had the chance to do some other little jobs whilst it's been partially disassembled too.

The problem (and a word of warning to those building) appears to have been present since I built the car (I'm assuming) as the earth connections I had taken from behind the dash (from the bonded in hoop) were not good enough. I have now taken a battery cable from a main chassis rail to the hoop resulting in a perfect earth. Assume the hoop wasn't a good earth due to the powder coating and wurth isolating the body / hoop from the main chassis.

Many thanks for all the help and suggestions.
