    Viper steering rack

Which steering rack was generally used on the Viper? is it kept stock width or are the shortened & if they are shortened, how much by & how long should they be?

    Cheers

Which Viper is it and what running gear does it use ? My mate had a Classic Replica Viper and it used an Escort quick rack with the arms extended each side.

Hi Tinka, it's a Classic Replicas Viper, it looks as if the rack has been narrowed, I've attached a photo of it. The car runs Jag suspension all around & Rover engine. I want to narrow the front end of the car to do away with the over sized arches by moving the suspension inwards, but the way the rack is in the car, it looks as if the steering arm going into the rack will would on the oil filer housing if it's moved. The car already has a remote oil filter.

Does anyone know how wide the rack is on something like a Dax, or any other Cobra replica that has Jag suspension (set up as per Jaguar specs) & what rack they would have used?
    thanks in advance

When you say you want to narrow the front suspension are you meaning you are going to move the front suspension mounting points ? The only way you will be able to use the steering rack from AK, Dax, GD or Sumo is if you are going to move the position of the steering rack completely. For example with AK and Dax one has the rack mounted in front or the wheels and the other one behind. If you are going to move the suspension mounting points and at present you have no bump steer issues and when finished want the rack to end up in the same position them carefully measure how much you move the mounting points of the suspension and go to a supplier with your rack and the information of how much narrower you need it and they might be able to sort you out.

Hi Martin, yes I'm looking to move the suspension mounting points inwards. Was your mates Escort rack from a Mk1 or a Mk 2 Escort? do you know if it was narrowed to fit?

    Cheers

He had a Escort MkV rack but from memory it was mounted slightly differently to yours as it was not the rack specified so the mounting position was changed to eliminate bump steer. The steering rack however was not modified just extensions made up to extend the arms each side.

Just curious but why did you buy a viper if you don't like the shape of the front end, why not buy a cobra you like the look of??

Hi, that's a bit of a cheeky question to be honest, but hey . The reason I bought it is because it was the right price, had been very well assembled, it has a lot of extras that added more value to the car & it had passed SVA, so it's legitimately registered. I've over 30 years experience of owning a high end bodyshop, so altering something to be how I want it to be isn't a big deal. The main thing that I don't like about the Viper IS the front end, so I'll make it look more like a Cobra should look & all it'll take is some of my time.

    Hello Outcast

I have had exactly the same thoughts as you, We are in the same boat I bought mine with not enough knowledge and an itchy trigger finger on ebay and the end result was a trip to Devon and a cobretti. your correct the arches are the parts that do it. although I have been looking through a lot to what makes them look different and it doesn't seem to be the width of the viper but the arch shape themselves I have the ford based suspension and wasn't sure how the look would be overall of you do narrow the front it it would look odd with the narrower front I guess the other models are narrower at the rear and then the body is narrower to complete the correct look.

I think some of the newer cobra's don't have enough arch to look as the originals did (I don't want to fight on this one they all look fantastic) But the closest look to ours is the american factory five cobra's they have wide arches and look great in my eyes so my thoughts are to see if you can cut the arch off and make new arches but with more of a curve to the arch which is what seems to be the difference on the factory five look.

I would be really interested to have more details on what you choose to do as we are in the same boat.

I think I got scared about cutting into the chassis and getting issues with steering geometry and problems from it all.

    Thanks

    Rob.
