Liberal Manefesto .......Jees ....they are kidding !!
Conservative Manefesto ......even worse .....as if it could be....we now get to pay for our social care out of the property we sit in !!!!!!!!!!!!
That's soooo clever they have finally funded social care out of our savings...
Well done for saving all your life ...going without on several occasions
    Buying your own property !!!
What fools we have been....should have just rented and pissed it up the wall
If paying for private health care was the only thing that kept us in Blighty ...Name one good reason why we should stay now
I might as well go to a warm country and pay for all my future health care ....at least there is an honesty with that.. instead of 40 years of bullsh-t
and politicians playing monopoly with our lives every 4 years

This is what happens when most of the population do not understand what an economy is, the populace then expect something that they thought it was. Ignorance always pays in dividends that you one is not expecting!

actually, you're in Scotland, so English rules don't apply.
I beleive the Scottish parliament can decide what it wants to do on many of those topics?
You already have zero prescription charges and zero university fees.

As for healthcare, you can always fly off to a warm, (perhaps non-EU) place, and choose to roll the dice.
You might get lucky, spend your pension drinking tequilas night and day, and then keel over with a massive coronary at 80 - dead in a single shot. Nice and clean. And easy on everyone else.

On the other hand you are far more likely to gradually accumulate a whole set of illnesses and ailments that require constant review and medication to prop you up and keep you out of hospital. These pathologies will eventually exacerbate, so that one or more will need in-patient care. Your private medical health insurance will pay out the first few times. But when the pot runs out, that's it. $55k for a week long stay after some surgery and in-patient care etc is on the small beans side. £25-50k per year for a basic care home without any extras. Rather more if you are in the dementia unit, or need specialist care. Few people have any understanding of how healthcare and community care costs escalate as soon as they are needed on a long term basis.

These treats are waiting for most of us as we slide down the banister into decrepitude....

Few people think about these realities when they are fit and healthy, and have a healthy income. That's life.... and as stated above, perhaps, happy ignorance.

Maybe I'm missing something but when my mum went in to care a couple of years back we had to sign over the house as she has over £23,500.

    This isn't new?

No its not they have gradually increased the capital threshold but its still very low.
if you are wealthy and lucky enough you get a choice of who too hand over your life savings too.. as Kevin very eloquently summed it up.

the sheepple will vote for the strong leader then complain when you are paying to see your GP and waiting for healthcare.
    happy days...

Why is it when you have worked all your life and paid your taxes, you have to pay for care in your old life, sell your house, but if you have never worked it's free. Somethings not right.

Under the Con manfisto, the threshold is raised from £23k to £100k.
What will happen in practice is that many people will see a chronic condition approaching, and sign over the house to their off spring. Hence, no assets.

Andy: your taxes/NI fund all the current pensioners. There is no 'personal pot', only a vague future entitlement. The fundamental problem is that the ratio of working people : pensioners has dramatically changed since you were in your 20s. Medical technology is keeping many more pensioners alive for much longer. This pic illustrates the problem:

    https://www.pwc.co.uk/issues/megatre...ues-dsc-02.png

This represents the biggest burden on the tax system as state pensions, healthcare and social care costs are spiralling out of control.

The underlying problem is that nuclear families in Western Countries are not reproducing sufficiently, with less than 2 kids per couple. It has been speculated that the extra wealth and prosperity we enjoy in the Western economies is encouraging people to spend more on themselves rather than produce more kids. One perhaps uncomfortable solution is that to stand still we need a few more migrants with their bigger families to generate the plebs that will replenish the taxable workforce. Or there needs to be govt incentives/tax breaks for everyone to breed more (but that costs tax money). or we all pay more taxes to keep the current pensioners going. Or we all start making earlier greater personal provision. Or we start to encourage euthanasia.

Unfortunately politicians of all parties would rather talk to you about ideas and principles, and ignore the inconvenient truths in the data.

an interesting topic as i have now paid for my house and have no kids to leave it to
so when i am 55 i will be taking out all or some of the equity out of the property as equity release basically selling the house back to the bank and living life to the full
if i get to ill to look after my self i will let the bank and the council fight it out who has the house after im gone me thinks ?

All of the above is true, I actually believe in a welfare state inclusive of education and health (and i dont mind paying), but the whole system needs a proper modernization not just tinkering. It was never conceived to do what it is doing, motability:650,000 cars, buy to let landlords the list is endless.
The sign off of assets will be tightened, I believe they are already looking at this to capture the revenue, Without wholesale reform the end is the same.
But the tax system also requires resetting.(simplification)

bring back the good old invacar! lol

Because the rich get to pay for the poor

Could just shoot the ones who've never worked, I suppose, but there'd be uproar..
