    Rover 3.5 v8 compression stroke

This is probably a very stupid question but the Haynes manual states that when installing a timing chain you need your engine at TDC on the compression stroke. If I don't yet have my cylinder heads installed then is every stroke the same? I assume it is only when the cylinder heads are on and then the valve sequence will determine compression stroke. If not how do i find TDC of piston 1 on the compression stroke?

no 1 piston at top of stroke and cam lobes for no 1 are lowest lift ie cam followers would be on the base of the cam with the lobe peaks pointing away on that cylinder -
    hope thats understandable....
