Help Needed!!

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for some help and advice...
I have what is left of my late dads SRV8, I believe he originally built it around 88-89, using a '78 Jaguar XJ6 as the donor car. From what I understand it was involved in an accident in which the fibre glass body was damaged. It was stripped down and a new body was bought for it. I am now left with pretty much all the parts, engine and gearbox etc. still on the rolling chassis. I'd love to get her back together. It's one of my earliest memories, being terrified I'd get sucked out of the car and hiding in the footwell, also one of my fondest watching my dad cry with laughter went tell friends about it as I got older!

The first hurdle I'm trying to get over is getting the log book. I have many pictures of the car as a Cobra with the number plate on and when I check the reg on the DVLA website it lists the car as Red (which it was, but as a Jag I believe it was blue) and the engine capacity as 5.7lt which must be the Chevy 350 I still have, right? But when trying to get a new log book, they have asked me for the engine and chassis number. I have provided both but they have said the chassis number does not match their records and it should start with 2T. Would this be the Jag chassis no.? The Chassis number I have found is faintly stamped on the front cross bar of the southern roadcraft frame and is a 6 digit number starting 60. Is this the right number? Has anyone else got a SRV8 that would know? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Based on the date you give, you have a very, very early example (mine is a 1999-2000 build).

As the DVLA website say it's a Jag, then you may have a few issues ahead of your -although if you have proof it was on the road, i.e. mot's etc it may help you.

Yours would of been registered for the road before SVA and well before IVA tests came about and at the time the rules in place where a bit laps to say the least. In that the cobra probably took the identity of the donor vehicle rather than a new one based on what the car really is - i.e. mine is registered as a Roadcraft.

You may need to get the assistance of a Paul Jepson (try search on the forums for his details) with regards to getting the SR registered correctly - try this thread for contact info, not sure if still valid:

I'd say that the 2T chassis number is most definitely the Jag donor. My VIN number begins SABTVR and is stamped onto the cross piece in engine area, in front of where the water pump pulley is. This website seems to indicate 2T is the jag number:

Are there any other letters/numbers before or after the 2T?

Good for you for picking up your dads project. I built mine with my late father, it’s still a rich source of happy memories even now.

Take your time with the rebuild, it’ll definitely be a marathon not a sprint.

Hi Frazer, It,s Frank again, we talked briefley at Goodwood on Sunday, you said you may want to look a a roadcraft from time to time, I live in Shripney Village, just North of Bognor Regis, and mine is always here, having said that, we will be putting a clutch in it soon, but ring me if you want a look, or if you come to a Goodwood meet. you may be able to drop in on the way back.
