Hi Murray
why don't you try them first without gas strut and see if you need them
Hi guys,
I am hoping to make some sidescreens for my GD and I would like to make them easier to clear when getting out.
I am going to hinge them in place of the wind wings.
Would anyone have the size or make of the gas struts used and maybe a few pointers on how to measure and fit them please?
Thanks far any help
Cheers,
Murray
That's the trouble with you Sailors, long hair, quick zips and, Oohh, look at the size of that!!
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Andy,
If you have ever watched and laughed at me getting out, with knees that don't bend and a door that swings back in, then think of me trying to wrestle with a sidescreen at the same time!
Recipe for disaster to be sure!
Cheers,
Murray

I’ve never seen GD sidescreens with struts before?
I find that if I push the screens out as wide as they go, then open the door as wide as it goes, then let go of the screen and it “jams” on top of the door holding both the door open and the screen wide open as well.

DB's hard top used to use gas struts in this way. Anyone who has one of his tops might be able to help.

I used DB's gas strut method. There is a picture on his web sight of the strut. I bought what I thought was the right length de gassed them and it is the action of opening the door that opens the side screen.
As AKCharlie says - Dave Britcliffe has them, very impressive too

I used them, but they are generally for use on kitchen units, and at 60N force are too powerful. I drilled a hole in them to let the gas out so they act more as friction devices rather than rams. I think they are about 6” long unextended (!) and were a couple of quid off EBay. Drop me a Pm with your email address and I’ll send you some pics.
I keep thinking I should write it up for the mag but haven’t got to it yet (sorry Graham H if yr reading this)
