Fuel gauge

Wiring help please,I'm using the smiths classic gauge and sender there are 2 wire connections on the gauge 1 connects to a live feed and the other to the sender.should the gauge have connection markings or does it not matter,should the gauge have an earth connection as my other gauges do ? If only one wire from the gauge runs to the sender where does the other sender wire connect to ?also is the way the sender is wired important? If any body can help with a simple diagram it would be a great help thanks in advance
