LT77 Gearbox - Third Gear trouble

As per the title I have been having trouble selecting third gear (LT77 Gearbox) when driving the car hard. If I drive gently it seems to go in no problem but at high revs I get annoyed trying to get it in eventually giving up and going to 4th instead, and it seems to be getting worse. Shifting down never seems to be a problem and if I go into 4th and then back to 3rd, again no problem. Double clutching also seems to make it a little better but it's a pain to keep doing.

How, if at all catastrophic is this? and more importantly how much is this likely to dent the bank account?

I'm no mechanic, I dabble a bit but removing a gearbox is way out of my league.

Thank for the help as always

Have you checked the condition of the rubber bushings holding the remote gear stick unit onto the gearbox. This gives all sorts of problems when they start to breakdown and rot, and simply replacing them can cure all sorts of gear changing issues.

Are they relatively easy to replace? is it a case of gearbox in or out?

My bushes fell apart and I fitted poly replacements. I had to use alot of extensions to get on to the bolts to remove them - maybe 4ft back so that I could swing the ratchet handle. If you have access through the top/side of the tunnel, you will find it easier. It sounds to me like this might not be your issue though.

I have the same third gear problem. I wonder if it's a tired synchromesh.

A similar second-to-third when I try a quick gear change. I always though it was my 'user error' being sat quite low alongside the gearbox tunnel and having a cantered forward shifter, would cause me to get the angle for the gate slightly out. I might have a look at those bushes as suggested.
