    Great stuff, thanks everyone for responding!
    So I think what I just put in is fine for a little more running in and then I will buy some Magnetec. I was just worried about synthetic and thin oils in an old style engine.
    My oil pressure seems a very steady 50psi

    VR1 20w50, in a 65 289, I don't use the car in the winter months owing to the salt on the roads so that viscosity suits me fine.

    Well in my RV8 I just use Halfords classic oil.
