    Rover V8 first start

Need some advice on the set up procedure of a Rover V8 with Edelbrock 500.

Started for the first time yesterday (only got a few seconds) but would not tick over. I’m thinking either cos I have no choke cable or just cos it was cold

I’ve jetted the carb to recommendations made by JRV8, and I’ve primed the oil pump and have good pressure and flow.

All the adjuster screws are left at factory settings.
    Regards

    Craig Perry

No, I'm not "repairing" it, I'm fine tuning its performance.

If it is the first time you have started your engine then you need to break in the cam so you shouldn't let it idle untill this is done. When I built my RV8 I never had or needed a choke and removed the mechanism completely.

    Morning Craig,

The engine needs to be up to temp before you even think about setting up the carb....have you still got to run the cam in....a good time to get the engine up to temp then set the carb after this.

A vacuum gauge is very helpful for setting up the carb

    something like this

Silly question, but fuel pump is definitely working?

I've not a Chevy 350 with no choke on an Edelbrock carb and a couple of stamps of the accelerator is usually enough to get enough fuel in to start it.

You can still use the manual choke with no cable but it will cancel if you use the throttle. I have a 3.5 with Edlebrock 500 (which is factory settings) and use my choke for tick over when starting. My first starts were problematic but this was due to timing issues with the distributor.

I am starting to get my head around setting up the carb and would be interested to know what you did. Also your engine size? Thank you.

    Yeah, I’m sure it is.

I’m sure the tick over issues was a combination of having no choke and me not wanted to wake the kids up with the throttle, they’ll be at nursery tomorrow but I have a day off work!!

    So

    start the engine.
Get it to tick over either with the throttle or the choke.
Set time with strobe light (but set it to what)
    Get engine up to temp

    Then what?

Just watched a YouTube video and it suggests (other than needles and jets) the only thing to do is set the AFR on each side, which only does a job on idle, as soon as you touch the throttle those screws don’t do anything.

Then set the idle position with the screw on the throttle linkage.

    Sounds simple!!

I was advised to set my timing to 12-14 advanced at tick over. That is all in mech and vac.
