    Wing Mirrors

I have been searching the forums for some guidance on which 'external rear view mirror' to buy and fit to my AK.

I need information about current IVA rules. Most of the posts concern SVA from years back.

I can see that there are two main areas of compliance. One is the area of visual reach. The other is the shape of the mirror (sticky out bits & sharp edges)

I can see that there are two methods of attachment to the car. One is on the body and one is on the screen pillar.

The posts suggest that mounting on the body does not give the full visual range ( you can see a large area of rear wing and not much else). The other way is to mount on the screen pillar. Having looked at lots of pictures it seems the mirrors (circular) are not that much higher than the body mounted ones.

I mention circular because the IVA manual shows only rectangular mirrors. It is not clear.

I don't want to get it wrong and fail IVA and end up with unwanted holes in the body work. I also appreciate that it is not wise to do something just to get through IVA and then change to something else.

On the face of it, it seems so easy, buy nice shiny breast shaped mirrors, fit mirrors and drive off into the sunset.

    Hope you can help

Use the ones sold by S&J, they are mounted on the screen pillars. They are not cheap at about £150 but will pass iva and do the job well. Do not mount any on the body, they will not pass iva due to viewing restrictions.

Looking at the diagram it is very clear the Minimum dimensions are shown as a rectangle within various shapes

Nothing to prevent you fitting a larger Round mirror
(and taping up the superfluous closed arc outside the rectangle bits )
I'd just use the round mirror as it looks best on the Cobra.
Those trapezoidal/rectangular shapes look like big ears

I would also like to pass first time without splashing so much cash on a pair of mirrors when only one will suffice.
My one inexpensive mirror will do nicely.

    Thank you drammyboy.

I now have a clear idea of how to proceed.

Circular Mirror of a diameter fully enclosing the rectangular shapes of the manual.

Mounted on the screen pillar high enough to see over the rear wings.

I will fit one on the nearside as well just because that's the way my mind works.

    Many thanks

A no-brainer when it came to selection
    cost cosT coST cOST COST

£23 is all I paid for mine last year.
I had a difficult decision to make - Round or those big ear things.
I see they have gone up in price this year ....that's inflation for you

    Russia !

Oh yes- mine were from a LADA RIVA advertised on US e-bay
I had a look at others ( those big ears) they were selling but settled on the round.

From memory I think the rectangular ones were MUCH dearer - about £28ea

    EDIT
    Just noticed a price increase
