    A question about painting

When spraying the car is it best to spray the doors, bonnet and boot off the car separately from the main body or is it best to spray them in place. If they are sprayed separatley is there a chance there may be differences in colour depth etc.

    Regards
    Paul

    RE: A question about painting

Paul, I am not an expert in this matter at all but I believe the preferred method is by removal of doors, bonnet etc. as this ensures good 'coverage' in the door shut areas etc. that may not get the required amount of paint if the door or boot etc. were in position when the spraying took place. Like I said though, I dont know owt' about painting - thats why someone else is painting my Cobra as I write!!

    RE: A question about painting

Mine was painted professionally and I know that it was painted minus the closure panels. They were painted separately.
If your shell is new make sure you give it a good baking prior to final preparation to settle the glass fibre and pop any trapped air pockets.

    RE: A question about painting

The doors etc all have to come off or you can't get into the reveals properly.

There are some paints (chromalusion, candy colours etc) that once the base colour is applied, you should if possible apply any finishing effects on the car as a whole, to ensure that you don't get varying effects from panel to panel

    RE: A question about painting

Just a couple of pix of the Cobra being painted by my son
    - in law , yes boot doors came off. I have taken photos of all
the process, It was black before. it took 50 hours from stripping
it down to getting the paint on. The paint alone took 12 hours as we had to mask up the car for the stripes that took 3 hours. Colour
Honda Supersonic blue with pearlecent stripes. Stripes are correct
as originals by widths. Paint, 5 coats, laquer 8 coats, base coat 3
pearlecent 4 coats. Total Cost 450 . now you can get a rough idea
why it cost so much to paint a CObra , add on 100 hours for two mens
labour say 15 per hour each and WOW . I'm lucky to have a sprayer in the family. If you want anymore pics i will send by e.mail

    RE: A question about painting

Thats a very nice paint job, nice colour too. Why is it that (in my opinion), Cobra's only look 'right' in Blue? I've owned a Red one and always said that I would never have a Blue one coz there are 'all' Blue. Guess what? My new Dax build is at the painters at the moment being prepped for...... yep, Blue. This is the colour scheme i'm having......

    RE: A question about painting

Yes I also think blue is a good colour, however it's all
a matter of taste. I do like to see other colours, Just as well
we have different tastes as if we only saw blue it would be boring.
The previous colour was blue / black. It took me a while to get used to the stripes, as I did feel like a boy racer, at 60 years old it took time to adjust. One more point am I the oldest Cobra owner . Apart from Eric that is?

    RE: A question about painting

    Hi Graham

I think you might have the start of an interesting question on who is the oldest and youngest owner of a Cobra. You only feel as old as the woman you feel they say. Mind you its not the age that matters once your behind the wheel I think everyone does not bother looking at the driver there looking at the car!!!!
Weather forecast is good for the weekend so should be up at Brentwood.
