Exhaust mount rubbers (bobbins).

Afternoon all,

couldn't find a definitive answer in search so a quick question about side exhaust mounts (bobbins).

Which to use Mini (as in the car) or Land Rover?

I have some Mini ones, new in a box, but they look a bit on the small size so thinking of getting some Land Rover engine mounts from Rimmer Bros' like these https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-STC434P . Any views on which to use, exhausts are 4 inch stainless steel?

I've used mini ones on mine, 7 years in no probs. Just like you I also looked at the landrover ones, they are absolutely enormous in comparison and I reckon very definitely overkill for an exhaust, so beefy I used one for my gearbox mount.

I suppose the point here is the purpose of the rubber bobbins-to flex. Too small and they will flex too much and separate. Too large they won’t flex and produce fractures “up stream”. Also it must depend on how much the engine rocks on large throttle changes which must vary from car to car. Pays ya money, takes ya choice I guess.

Interesting, I was going to move away from these and try to find something that has the flexibility but also a direct mechanical fastening all the way through it, I had several failures of these on mine where the rubber sheared, was never sure if it was heat related or something else. I think I was using mini sized ones but note that Dave has had no problems in 7 years, maybe I just had bad ones.

OK, take two. Land Rover bobbins are just a bit too big so any reason why I can't do it something like this, with the bobbins in compression not tension as they are in the other diagram. One bobbin behind the other, gives a similar overall size but just looks a bit better from the side Untitled (1024x526).jpg

The last picture is basically how the Dax mounts are - well, they're how the mounts on the DB sidepipes I have are intended to work anyway.. the exhaust sits "on" a single bobbin (M10 thread IIRC). No harm in using two, I suppose - all the motion ought to be up and down along the length of the car (as the chassis twists) anyway
