It certainly looks as though something is needed to protect the radiator, its just a case of choosing the right mesh, too smaller a mesh and you starve the radiator of cooling air, too large a mesh and road chippings could get through so its a compromise really, ill
see what is available.
I do have an electric fan with adjustable setting which may help.

I put my original Griffin rad in my car in 1990 or thereabouts and it ran without mesh until 2018 when I replaced it with a lovely new Afco. First trip out I got a stick in to the fins!! Luckily not through a core but it made a mess. Hence I now have mesh!!
