did that by telephone already, (JK: 'what do you want to do that for? [you idiot]* the Ford TL is the correct box for this car' )... is it worth the live confrontation!?
little bit worried about the mpg issue - I see you have 475bhp, if its a standard SA 427 SO, 75 more than the 406 package, so maybe I'll also be dribbling along in low-teen territory as well (*my parenthesis)
what diff ratio have you got?

It's a stroked 427, 462 cube, so maybe around 500 bhp. What ever it is, it's certainly more than enough for the abilities of the driver......

Diff is 3.31, but this is too short for me. 2.88 power lock going in during winter lay up. Should then be around 2500 rpm at 90 mph. I think it will return maybe 15-18 mpg then, who knows!

John Kerr reckons to get around 19 mpg from his big block, I'm not sure of the spec. but I told him his shoes were obviously too small......

Yes a 2.88 is taller than the 3.31.

If you are going with a 2.88 I would definitely use a Wide ratio top loader or a TKO600.
If I could only get you to drive my Cobra you would see what I am talking about.
I have some good news gents.

I checked the fuel mileage on my way home from the meet this weekend.

Average 70mph @ 3000rpm gave me 12mpg US. That is with a 2x4 barrel induction set up 1200cfm 482 cubic inch engine rated at 585HP at the crankshaft.
This was all highway driving with some sprints up to 85mph for passing and some traffic at 55mph.
With the larger UK gallon a wide ratio TL and the 2.88 gear you should be getting in the upper teens with no problem.
But if you can't keep your foot out of it all bets are off.

Tell Bill that you don't want some girl in a 3 cylinder Metro blowing by you on the motorway.

thats great news, but 1200 cfm? thats one hard drinking engine you've got there!

I know US gallons are smaller than in the UK, but arent the miles smaller as well?

cheers,
Kevin

Miles are miles. I don't know why some idiot made a US gallon.
1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 liters
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters
1 mile =5,280 ft same in US and UK
A UK gallon weighs 10 pounds at 62*F and that is how they arrived at the volume.
A US gallon is actually the Statute of 5th of Queen Anne in 1706, as 231 cubic inches exactly (3 in × 7 in × 11 in) So the volume is what dictates its amount. Is that redundant?
OOPS! sorry the idiot was Queen Anne.
Any more useless information needed?

1200cfm but they are vacuum secondaries.

Neil O I think you mean Wilf said everything else in the US is bigger.

I have a close ratio toploader (large input/output) with a 2.88:1 Powrlok. The 'box came from SA along with the engine.
I haven't got the faintest idea what the fuel consumption is yet though as I still have this running issue. Hopefully, once I get the new carb, it will be sorted as everything else checks out fine.

Neil,
Do you have Bill's alloy heads on you 427? What carb do you have?

Paul

Presumably, that was for water and not the "go faster" juice that we're talking about, considering that petrol is lighter than water.

Sorry I left that part out. Yes it is of water.

Paul,
Let us know what you think of the combination once you get it running properly.
And go through the engine and re-torque all the bolts you can reach to the proper specs including the crank bolt and the bell housing bolts.
And after each run check your header bolts. Especially with alloy heads.

I have Edelbrock heads, which I think he gets in unprepared and ports etc. himself.
It's a Holley carb, four barrel double pumper, 850 cfm.
