| It's an Edelbrock 500 on a RV8 3.9L (20 thou overbore). Engine number denotes SD1 manual 9.35:1 CR, so originally a 3.5L. It just had an MOT at the weekend and passed OK, CO was 2.89% & HC 329ppm, OK on idle speed & smoke level. But it feels like there are flatspots particularly on accelerating early up through 2nd/3rd from the run back I had. More than this I'm going to have to dig a bit deeper tomorrow when I get a chance to get the bonnet up & have a good look.....

IMHO the edelbrock is a good carb but NOT with the standard setup! They are dead easy to work on so the first thing is to find out what if anything has been done to it. You can whip a needle out of it in about 10 seconds....have a look on the edelbrock web site. a 65-52 needle is standard and will over fuel the engine.(can't remeber the needle part number but it's on the web site). To do a proper check you need to whip the lid off the carb so that you can check the primary and secondary jets. Remove the the air filter stud as before you take the lid off the carb, it will rip the gasket otherwise! Don't loose the tiny spring clips that work the accelerator pump and choke! Whilst the lid is off set the float heights as they are all over the shop as standard! I'd also check the fuel pressure at the carb, you want about 5 psi. You then need to check the total fuel fuel. Let the fuel flow into a container for one minute. You need between 1.5 - 2 litres per minute. Nearer 2 being better. I've posted LOADS of stuff about this carb up before, have a root around! Don't worry about not knowing anything about RV8's and these carbs, nether did I a couple of years ago! (Still don't according to some!). Once you suplly some more info about your carb I can help you get it setup pretty well! The other thing that kills the performance of the RV8 is the terrible setup of the standard rover ignition. The basic 35 DLM8 is OK but needs s few mods to release a load more grunt that's hiding in your motor! (What system are you running?) Even the after market ones if setup to the standard advance will be no good! If you've got points God help you! What Cob do you have? Pete
