cobretti viper

Hey everybody,
I`m new over here so my first questions can sound stupid or easy for you but for me realy interesting to know

I saw a cobretti viper, cortina bases, on sale with an 2 twin 45 del auto carbs and high lift cam. And now:
- how much bhp should this have? 120?
- do you know if it`s possible to put an other motor on that base?
- what`s the price for such a car from >25years ago, if you know that it was factory builded, nice finishing, everything ok, only a small engine...

I should realy apreciate some comments or help about this. Don`t want to buy a bad car with good looks.

Thanks in advance

greg

Re: cobretti viper

120 hp is realistic; it could be a bit more if done well.

The obvious engine swap would be a Rover V8 since they weigh about the same and would make the car much more desirable and fun!

Not sure of the value, my first guess is 'not much' since 4 pot Cobras have never been very popular.

Re: cobretti viper

Hi Greg and welcome
Ford V6 will fit in, either Cosworth 2.9 V6 (190BHP) or standard 2.9i V6 (150BHP).
There are a few of us on here with Vipers of various makes, most have gone with the Rover V8.
As everybody will tell you, there are no standard bits to make engines/radiator etc etc fit. You have to do your own welding, metalwork etc.
Good though.
Cheers

Not Me!

Started with the Jag V12 in the V12 chassis and that didn't fit!
Went to a Ford 351M (was sold to me as a 351C) and that didn't fit!
Got a Ford 302 and it fits like a glove!

The V8 chassis does take a Ford 302 also as I know people who have them...

Cheers...

Re: cobretti viper

And this for the cortina base???
The owner told me that he has a cortina gearbox, but I don`t find some information about that, should that be an other modelname?

Re: cobretti viper

Greg,

As I said, this is in my V12 Jag chassis. I'm reasonably confident in saying that you would get a V8 in a Cortina chassis but the best person to answer your question is Bob Busbridge of Cobretti. I would drop him a line and ask him the question. He may be a little slow at answering e-mails at the moment as he is experiencing PC problems.
I do have his telephone number but since it is not listed on his website I shall not list it here. If you want to ring him then PM me and I'll send it to you.

Re: cobretti viper

Greg - no-one yet has said what I am going to:

If you want a car with certain engine in it, buy one with it in the first place.

Engine swaps can be done, but you must also consider gearbox/rear axle/cooling/exhaust/brakes etc.

And the Viper is by no means the easiest car to start doing major component swaps with.

The car you are looking at should be totally dirt cheap because of the above factors. Like free.
