Vented discs on corty front end

Hi all.

Just need some confirmation here.
I have the standard cortina front disc (solid) set up with princess 4 pots fitted.

I want to fit vented discs to the front due to using the Rv8 (soon to be upped a bit from standard!).
I have the required spacing kit for the calipers (removed it to fit the standard discs) but would like to know which discs to go for..

I believe from other posts that Capri ones fit but Do the following fit without further mods??

Thanks in advance:thumb:

Re: Vented discs on corty front end

I have done exactly the same on my Sumo. The capri discs fit nicely onto the Cortina stub axle although i had to grind off a small section of one to allow the disc to rotate freely.
One thing you will find is that not all of the brake pad will be in contact with the disc - a small area at the edge is not worn (presumably because the AP calipers were designed for bigger discs) . This isn't anything to worry about.

The only other thing to watch is that the AP calipers can be fitted with two spacers - one is 8mm and the other 10mm. You need the 8mm for these discs.

Re: Vented discs on corty front end

Just wondering how you have connected the brake pipes. The AP calipers originally had two flexi pipes into them. I tried this setup but found that the standard Cortina/Capri master cylinder then had too much travel. I eventually went back to the original design of one flexi pipe which then "splits" at the caliper - works fine and brakes are very smooth

Re: Vented discs on corty front end

Hi Robin

Thanks for the reply. All I need now is some more money to get the discs..
will check the spacers when I am next on the car.
calipers are connected as I got them like the piccie
I found one of your earlier posts about the brakes locking up. I take it the change you made sorted that out then??
Looks like I may have to repipe the front end slightly??

I must add that I haven't actually filled the brake system yet as i am waiting to put the engine back in first.....Just in case!!!

Re: Vented discs on corty front end

Hi Dean

The problem appears to have been solved by replacing the master cylinder. Changing the seals in the old one didn't cure it - maybe the bore was worn more than I thought.

Just looking at your pictures - you have connected a pipe to one of the bleed nipples - can't see any reason why it shouldn't work but you should be aware that these calipers can be a real PIA to bleed sometimes. let us know if your system is succesful once you get the fluid in.

What have you fitted re shocks/springs. I appreciate yours is a different kit to mine but I'm toying with the idea of trying to fit coilovers to the Cortina front end. Is that what you've done?

Re: Vented discs on corty front end

Hi

Thought they were plumbed a bit silly but I am at the stage where everything can still be changed.

Not decided on the front suspension yet. All I have is 2 off 3" long pieces of scaffold tube holding the front level. May be a bit bumpy and not very forgiving at the mo. The standard springs left the front about 6" higher than it should be which didn't look quite right!!!!

Its a toss up between coil overs or something completely different.
Just need to see what space I have left when the engine is in place.

Will let you know when I discount it all and just chop 3" out of the springs.......
