Springs for the viper

Right, some of you must have hit this as well - I fitted the body back to my freshly rebuilt chassis (Cortina front end, sierra rear) the other week (The first time the two have been together in 2 years) to find the body sits 5 inches to high so obviously it needs lower springs. I noticed another thread like this on the non-viper forums which mentioned that pilgrim might be able to help but having spoken to them today it seems that they cant get the springs they used to use as the supplier they used has closed. I've also emaile cobretti but as yet no reply...

So have you guys hit the same problem and if so how what springs are you using?

CeeJay.

Ceejay if you contact Avo they will tell you exactly what shocks and springs you require for your Viper model. There are so many people out there with Vipers looking like High-Lux Trucks all because they have the wrong springs and shockers fitted. I have attached pictures of a Classic Replicas Viper in Holland (Granada based) that Andre went to a great deal of trouble to get the right stuff for the job. It is not necessary to alter mounting locations on the chassis. Osgood

I already have avo shocks fitted so I'll give them a ring on the morning and order up the springs!

Ceejay there is generally an Avo number stamped on the base of the unit which should give you a starting point to find the problem or perhaps too many coils on the springs, there is generally a set of numbers and poundage printed on them also. Osgood

Ceejay

Can't offer any advice about the rear, but had a talk with Dave at Dampertech ref the front when i was looking that way for mine.

You can fit coil overs to the front but need to strengthen the bottom mounts a bit. then measure the fully compressed gap (between top & bottom mounts) then the at rest (nominal ride height) and give him the readings.
They should be able to help and will suggest spring rates as well.

I opted for a different setup so cannot tell you the rates etc.

The rears may be sorted the same way, as i think coil overs should fit but note my first sentence!!!!

cheers

Re: Springs for the viper

Hi Ceejay
I've had a look at this a while back and am currently ignoring it!
I have the sierra running gear and was under the impression I had a 4x4 subframe until I noticed that the spring is in a separate location from the shock making it an estate rear end.

I decided to just get a lowering kit, dropping the ride height 45mm. It did look much better, right even. While the exhaust hitting the floor when I sat in was a concern, the fact that it left the wheels at about 15 degrees in at the top and resting on their inner edge disturbed me.

I have yet to fully explore the re alignment ability of the hub and put the old springs back on. From my initial inspection I fear there is no way to adjust this camber angle.

Of course I may just be being stupid again...
It might be worth looking into it before forking out loads of money on parts though.

Best of luck with it!

Forgot my 99 percent chance of getting 50-50 wrong! Of course the estate rear sub assembly has the shock inside the spring, just checked...

Still doesn't look like there's any adjustment capability in the rear hubs

Have a look at this link to the Robin Hood owner's site. The vast majority of Robin Hoods are Sierra based and suffered from the same problem as you - it appears to originate fom the fact that the diff is not mounted at the same height (relative to the hubs) as on the donor. Their solution is to install wedge plates between the hub carriers and the backplate. I have fitted these to my Robin hood and it seems to do the trick . Just thought it might help with your problem.

Cheers,

Thanks Robin. There's hope!! What a wonderful place this forum is!
I'm not quite sure where it goes exactly but I'll have another look tomorrow and maybe try the "washer" method to explore the concept and see how it looks.
You really have cheered me up!!
Thanks again
