Speedo location

Hi

As per usual the jolly viper has bitten back before i have started....

Looking a step or 2 ahead has revealed that the main cross member that the steering column fits on to (If you have one you'll know!!) encroaches into the area that the instruments should be!!

So, as everything else is different on this one, the dash board is going to be non typical!!
Before you say - no it is not going to be touch screen. I am going to fit actual gauges (I know Slogger - Shock!!?? there are some things I think need to be analogue!!)

However the question being does the speedo have to be in any particular location other than viewable from the driving seat? (legally / SVA wise)

It looks as though without going down the major surgery route that the speedo & rev counter will need to be below the Fuel/oil/temp/volt gauges.

Has anyone done/tried this arrangement and if so any photos??

Cheers

Hi Dean
As long as the gauges are visible and do not need to be hidden behind steering wheel for radius reasons, i would have thought you can put them anywhere.
I would have thought you would have gone for a HUD system, with a voice recognition system just to be awkward
Cheers
Kevin

There are so many configurations out there, no two cobras are exactly alike. I don't know the legal side of this, but I suspect 'visible' will be your only criteria.

If your preferred layout requires surgery, I say do it. You will always regret not going the extra mile if you don't. Your clocks are always in your face... you won't be able to forget the time you "nearly had your perfect dash". And anyway, how major can the surgery be really? Cut the section out, install a cranked area to miss your clocks, and reweld/bolt in place. Easy for me to say of course, I don't have to do it, but if you move your clocks as a compromise you will always regret it.

Is your perfect dash a replica of the original? My clocks are all fitted over the tunnel and laid out symmetrically. I do wonder sometimes whether a more original look might suit me better though.

Mark, Mr Steamy's Cob is far from the 'exactly alike' quarter.

The way he is going, the space shuttle computer systems will be like a child's play thing.

Dean, go on, go for the aviation spec thin Crystal display with the head up option!

As for your instrument location. I did come across a Cob some years back with the Speedo and Tacho mounted below a row of 50mm instruments. Didn't look bad, but different.

I thought that the shuttle had been using a 386 for years. Have they now upgraded it to a Pentium?

Dean, What chassis have you got? (is it Jag based?) If it is I can let you have pics how I've done mine (I had relatively minor issues to resolve to get my dash and instruments in)

Cheers...

Cor you cheeky lot...

I would get upset....
If it wasn't all true!!

Iain
It's the cortina based one (if you can say one!)

I must admit that the HUD / TFT etc routes are tempting and would fit in with the rest of the technology but (and Wilf will probably breath a sigh of relief) even I think this has to be "almost" normal!!!

I have been thinking about it today and have decided that the grinder and welder will be coming out to play again.

Any arrangement as it stands will be a compromise so i might as well bite the bullet.
After all what's a little bit more work to a viper owner???

Mark
Surgery implies several dozen steps backwards on a viper.
Everything is designed to fit.......in the places you will never need to fit them but do not fit where they should be.
It's almost the rubiks revenge for cobras...
