    Hawk FIA build

    I took my good friend Owain with me to Silverstone last year in the Le Mans Viper and from that point onwards he's been totally hooked, to the point that when a Hawk FIA came up for sale, we made an executive decison to buy it and build it together, just as good mates do. It'll be a hoot!! and we haven't stopped laughing all day today. We picked the car up just before Christmas and finally made a start on putting it together today. It's going to have a few changes to the way a normal Hawk kit looks, though retaining the ethos of the original cars.

    So, without further ado, here's a few pics of where we are at with it at the moment.

    The car had been loosely assembled to make it a roller, but as it was to go through an IVA test, we felt it best to strip it right down and start again from scratch, just to satisfy the testers at VOSA. The body was seperated from the chassis and put onto a custom made bench to keep it out of the way whilst the chassis was assembled




    So, the build began and we've managed to assemble all of the front suspension apart from the discs and steering rack. We're also looking into putting different hubs onto the front as we're not able to get any wheels or splined inserts from Gerry at Hawk

    All in all it was a very productive day and after 5 hours work we now had the front and rear suspension in place (apart form the discs and steering rack as mentioned). next it was to lay out all of the brake and fuel lines and get it all clipped to the chassis. next will be cladding the engine bay with aluminium, and this is going to be soooo much easier than the job I did to mine recently, I'm actually looking forward to doing that As soon as we get an age verification for the engine from Heritage, we can then paint and detail it and put that in prior to refitting the body.

    I had quite a productive day today and managed to get most of the engine bay clad, (first fix) with aluminium. The car came with laser cut panels, but they were absolutely nowhere near like fitting properly. All of the measurements seemed off by a couple of mm and it just looked so wrong. I've ended up having to make new templates for some of it, whilst adjusting, cutting and reprofiling the laser cut stuff to make it fit tight. Not too bad all in all though for a days work and was a damn sight easier than the Viper to do.














    The next task it to give it a final trim here and there, paint the footwells and fit the aluminium panels permanently

    I took the executive decison to aluminium panel the area where the side vent sits and surprisingly, it was a fairly straight forward job. When you now look into the engine bay there is zero fibreglass visible, adding to the illusion of it being an aluminium bodied car. The rest of the aluminium panels are now trimmed for a snug fit, with the sides to the footboxes spaced away slightly from the fibreglass. The next step is to fit it all together and then make a start on the inside. In the meantime Owain has run all of the brake and fuel lines through the chassis and that's just about completed

    As with my Viper, it's going to be a race inspired car with styling cues from various cars. The aim is to make it look as if it's just come off a race track, in period. Wheels will be FIA's with 245's and 295 Avons, the body will look absolutely nothing like a Hawk as the front arches will resemble GPG4C, as will the cut outs in the rear 1/4 panels, but the rear cutouts will follow the lines of the car a little better. The front end treatment will be similar to my Viper, with the ali brake ducts and oil cooler "letterbox". It'll run a hardtop with a "Gurney bulge" to cover the roll bar/cage, but it will flow fairly smoothly into the roof and hopefully not look like an after thought. The interior will be fully paneled in aluminium and left raw. The bonnet will probably be single skinned with a 3/4" tube frame, I'm just trying to find someone local that can bend the tubing to the right profile as I don't have a tube bender capable of bending it at the moment. If I have time, I might make some tube framed doors as well.

    Great start Nige, looking real tidy in the engine bay. Will be interested when you get to the body mods and how you go about it. Gonna check out the viper thread.....

    Superb looking work. Nice to see more cars being built with an eye towards what the originals looked like.

    You mean this one Lloyd?...

    obviously the parking sensors weren't working properly!, it has since been repaired!

    yeah, that was a bit of a clout on the car wasn't it, but I guess it just buffed out

    We had the chance to push the chassis outside, not too sure about the position of the steering wheel though Owains been sorting out issues with the remote for the gearbox today, so we're now ready to paint and detail the engine and hopefully get it fitted on the weekend.
