    Fuel vapour smell.

I know this is a well discussed and common problem but I’m now experiencing this when I go out in the garage near the rear of the car when I take the cover off. Also when I took it for a spin today I noticed it when I was driving. There is no evidence of under bonnet fuel leaks so I wondered if the way the air swirls around the back of your head it could be the seal on the Aston type fuel filler cap? It’s about a 5 inch diameter cap. Anyone replaced this seal and can recommend a source? Thanks in advance.

Not replaced a seal Dek but I would suggest Chris Glover at Brasscraft may be a good place to start.

If you're running rich, it could be from the sidepipes?

I don’t think so as I can smell the fumes with the engine off.

I get a faint whaft when I open my boot.
I think the fuel level sender needs tightening slightly or the jubilee clip on the filler pipe.

Crispian Glover can obviously help source parts but they seem to seal pretty well plus you have the non return flap inside as well.

Would be good to know what you find out,
    Thanks

There used to be an issue with the flexible filler pipe in the boot that you could not get a good seal with the hose clip. It does not take much to smell fumes. Before you start fixing try as much as you can to find where the vapour smell is coming from.

I have a vent tube that vents out through the top left wheel arch on my SR
and yes I do get a bit of vapour smell occasionally but nothing too concerning .
The only solution to completely eliminate this would be to add a charcoal canister
which is what frauds did with the early euro Mondeo's .
With they NAO versions they did the same but the set up was the size of a small
    suitcase !
    Chris.
