    Sumo steering issue

    Pilgrim Sumo 3 using Ford Sierra steering assembly.

    Pilgrims way to secure steering shaft is through a box section in lower bulk head, a bush fits into this and is secured by a weak flimsy sprung washer slid onto the shaft and pushed onto bush to hold it in place.

    The flimsy securing washer moves allowing bush to move up out of the box section (especially when wheel on and off many times sorting out dash electrics), result very insecure steering shaft.

    Now Pilgrims engineer suggests fitting a jubilee clip around shaft to hold washer and bush in place.

    IVA testers suggested a bracket in engine bay holding a bearing to support shaft (between bulkhead and steering rack).

    Has anyone resolved this problem by making the extra support as suggested at IVA or have any better ideas than a Jubilee clip in attempt to hold bush in place

    Not so much Pilgrim's as Ford's way of locating the lower steering column.

    The "standard" upgrade is to fit a spherical bearing in the bulkhead as detailed in the Sumo Wiki website (link below).

    The details are to be found in the "Stage 1 - Rolling Chassis" section under the sub heading "Steering"
