    Bristol Iva

    Morning all.

    Has anyone used Bristol IVA Center? It’s the closest to us as Southampton is not taking people back in after covid.

    What’s your thoughts and views on the place.

    Used them a few times when exeter have been busy.

    No issues at all really with first time passes each time.

    That’s good to know. I only have a few things I think they might be a little on the fence about.

    Noise 105db
    No heat shields on the pipes
    Retro fit reverse light.
    Switches being 10mm over the guards

    Apart from that it’s built to the letter.

    There’s no on the fence with iva. It’s pass or fail.

    Noise will fail. Must be 99db tested at 2/3rds declared maximum power rpm

    Doesnt need heat shields

    Reverse light will be ok as long as it is e marked and positioned correctly.

    Switches outside the steering wheel exemption zone must not protrude from the dash. If they do they must be guarded in all positions to prevent contact with the sphere.

    If it’s going to fail it will always do so on the one bit you didn’t think it was going to.

    Also Make sure you have a 17 digit vin number with the last 6 digits numerical. I remember when we built the F5s they had short frame numbers. Caused all sorts of issues booking iva tests and then getting them registered.

    Thank you gents. I’ll square that all away. I’m expecting a fail as it’s my first one as ffr. But then we should get the flow.

    Noise test I got a app on the phone which will be out so I’m gonna aim low on that and then we should pass or are you both using proper meters.

    I have my own db meter but to be honest I just do it by ear now. Well over 100 tests tells you how much extra baffling to get you close.

    If the tester is onside you can always if they allow tinker at the station and re pack the baffles with extra material if required.

    Remember the exhaust tip needs a 2.5mm minimum radius too or it will fail on sharp edges.

    Ha ha. There is a bit of that i suppose.

    That said I think the testers ears and the official iva testing machine have also aged a bit having recently tested a string of stroked big block Ford engines.

    On noise:
    Baffles made up of 3 half-moons in antiphase tack-welded to a piece of rod mounted down your baffle pipe will knock a fair few dBs off and still allow your exhaust gases to exit.
